Beschreibung : Pair of figures Montol, Nigeria wood, dull greyish brown patina, both rising from strong legs with big feet, a slender trunk with broad angular shoulders merging into strong free worked arms with stylized hands, a columnar neck supporting an oval head with drilled eyes flanking a small nose, a slim slit mouth underneath, female figure with facial scarification marks, both crowned by a high-crested coiffure, dam., cracks, missing parts (feet), signs of abrasion, on base, the Montol are a small ethnic group settling to the north and the east of the Goemai. These sculptures were used for fortune telling and healing rites. They belong to a men society called komtin. Figures of the Montol are quite rare and their style is not clearly defined. It varies from one carver to the other.
