Beschreibung : Bangwa People, Cameroon Grasslands: An Important Janus Night Society Mask Like his old friend Roy Sieber, Dr. Preston has a special fondness for tough, primal African sculpture. This was a taste shared with the late great collector Werner Muensterberger, from whom Dr. Preston acquired this marvelous example. He writes, The severe cranial interpretation of the heads is similar to the cranial form of the Komo helmet mask (Fig. 7) that we chose to illustrate my interview of Muensterberger for Tribal Art (No. 39, 2005). We both found the Komo and the Bangwa to provoke an interpretation of extreme aggression. But we lauded the aesthetic 'foil' of the sculptor's balance of concave versus convex forms within a single large volume. The extended forehead furthers the haunting, frightening impression of the deeply sunken eye sockets. The heavily encrusted surface, somewhat flaked but largely intact, was undoubtedly intended to further the fearsome impression made by the sculpture.
